Opportunity 2: 10 entries make it to the finals

At the start of the new year, 2006, the ten finalists for the Opportunity 2 Challenge were announced by the hosts of the evening Moira Delia & Manuel Xuereb during the special edition of Showtime ma' Aceline on Malta's national TV station, PBS-TVM.

The ten entries which made it to the final round from the list of 36 semi-finalists were the following:

6. Is it destiny - Vittorio Gauci (Andrew Zammit/Julie Brincat)
8. Another day of hope - Alexia Schembri (Chan Vella/Chris Azzopardi)
9. Let me dream - Jessica Muscat (Dominic Galea/Doris Chetcuti)
10. Is it too late - Joanna Attard (Philip Vella/Philip Vella)
13. Is it love - Pauline Briffa (Elton Zarb/Rita Pace)
20. I walk the streets alone - Dario Bezzina (Ray Agius/Alfred C. Sant)
24. A bit of magic - Ann Marie Ellul (Andrew Zahra/Rita Pace)
25. It just comes natural - Josef Tabone/Amanda Farrugia (Clinton Paul/Clinton Paul)
32. Stay with me - Lara Azzopardi (Chan Vella/Paul Callus)
35. Forever young - Jan Pace (Philip Vella/Philip Vella)

The final will be held on Saturday 7th January, where the two winners will be announced. The winners of the competition will be added to the Malta Song for Europe 2006 list at spot number 4 and 15, thus bringing the number of finalists of this year's Maltese national final to 18. The two winners will be assigned a place in the final according to the announcement order of the 2 titles. Live webcast of the final will be shown via Di-ve.com.

I think it doesn't matter who hosts the show. And most of all it is not the song for europe programme. There are other singers who are resident singers for 5.5hours not for 2.5hours as Manuel.

let's start:

ali&lis - everyday on PBS in the mornings and con-currently on Edu22 tv with 22am

fabrizio - 'kollox sibt' on net tv + all the air time he has with his video clips

natasha&charlene - 'kollox sibt' on net tv

christian arding - on 'tista' tkun int' on pbs

andreana - on 'xarabank' on pbs

nadine axisa - on 'xarabank' on pbs

j.anvil - "Bailando" on NET TV

manwel - "Showtime" on TVM

olivia lewis - 'kalamita' daily + saturday on super one

kevin borg - like olivia - everyday + sat on 'kalamita' super one

then there are the singers from Hot Spot (net tv) who had a lot of promotion too - Anabel, Cliff, Eleonor Spiteri, Claudia Faniello

then there are singers who had very good publicity during summer:

Paul Giordimaina - piano player on BBQ on super 1 tv

Eleonor cassar - BBQ on super 1 tv

Pamela - video clip of "PLay on" was on tv all summer

so let's face it guys & girls...EVERYONE had his share of publicity and pr. there isn't anyone who is at a disadvantage this year!! let's be true to ourselves at least!!!

I would like to comment about certain people who are fans of particular singers, who always praise their favourite singer and throw mud on other singers who are favourite too in the competition! Everyone has his or her opinion about singers and every singer has his/her particular fans! So when you express your opinion express it in a fair way! With all the respect I don't think that this OPPORTUNITY 2 show was a good idea. A lot of cheap songs participated and most of the finalists are cheap too. Forever young is hopless for instant!!! And would u like our country to be in Greece with such poor songs? Maybe the best song is IT JUST COMES NATURAL but the singers can't sing. Nice tune but we r useb to it, no more ABBA plsss. Last year we had Love is the Reason and it didn't even hit the top 10. I think Europe wants something different now! I have no hidden agenda but I don't believe that the 10 Opportunity songs are good!!!!

I am not a composer...not an author...I am not a relative of the singers. But I can't ignore the fact that the songs were childish and were good for the JESC!!! This is my opinion and you have to respect the fact that people have different opinions!!!! As I've said I have no hidden agenda but the OPPORTUNITY SONGS didn't impress me!!! We can't expect to win the ESC with those songs.

I agree with EUROMANIA...afterall we are seeking for songs who might represent us at the Eurovision 2006 in Athens. The only song in my opinion which might do well in Athens (hardly) is the one by Vittorio. The others are either cheap-pop (like the ABBA-duo...pls no more ABBA songs!!!) and also many Ballads once again (plsssss no more BALLADS too!!!).

we want upbeaty songs with powerful choreographies (like winners Wild Dances or My Number One or Everyway that I can) or experimental songs (like Olivia - Dejavu) or ethnic songs (like Zelijko - Serbia 2004) or a powerful pop-rock (like Vanilla Ninja - Switzerland 2005)....but definately no more boring Ballads or cheap Malta-pop songs or copied ABBA tunes!! pls!!!!

Songs that are rejected from MSFE does not mean that they are trash,rubbish, not good etc etc. Some of the songs submitted are very very good, but you know why they are not selected? Cause they have not a popular singer. That's why they are not selected for the finals. Lets take this year edition of MSFE. Many of the songs that were rejected are good as those in the finals. I heared many of these songs and they are very catchy songs and also nice.

The Polish final is on the 28th Januray and I've downloaded all the songs 2 weeks ago. Why can't we do the same thing here in Malta? We want to have the chance to listen to the songs for a whole month so that we'll be able to vote correctly next month!

All I know is that "Is it too late" is d only song that Philip Vella has amongst the 10 finalists...I usually like his songs...If I remember well this song had a particular style different from the rest...
After all, there isn't any one song among the 10 which we can expect to make show with after all!!

Yes i remember the Youth Song Festival. Pity it is not held any longer.

i particularly liked "THE VOICE OF THE MOON" (celtic-ballad) from the first edition if i'm not mistaken was by Ina Robinich and Deo Grech wrote it.

and the next year Deo Grech won it again with uptempo song "BIRDS OF LOVE" by Joanna Schiricha (now Joanna Attard) and he was 3rd also with another celtic-ballad "ANGEL" by Caroline.

I don't like J Anvil at all! Let's focus on other singers! Natasha & Charlene are by far better! However, they need to work a lot on the presaentation of the song if they need to win. Last year the song was ok but the presentation terrible. Nice outfits are not enough....we want a show!!

But..as far as i know Gerald James Borg only got 1 song in malta and it had to change singer twice (Eleonor --> Nadine --> Anabel) because it wasn't ranked high enough to keep original singers and he complained that his best songs didn't make it through in malta.

perhaps Gerard feels that this will not be his year in malta so he is trying hard abroad. good luck!

Dario Bezzina was born on 20th June 1989 and started singing from an early age during school activities. He decided to take up singing seriously at the age of 11 years and began attending singing lessons at Doreen Galea.

In 2004, Dario participated in the Juniour Song for Europe with the song "Eviva l-Muzika", which was written and composed by himself. He placed second with only 1 point away from the winners. This experience has given Dario, an immense satisfaction, and has helped him considerably in his popularity in Malta and even abroad.
In 2005, dario together with his sister Grecia, participated in the "Ghanja tal-Poplu Zaghzagh 2005´with the song "il-Habib ta' l-Iskola", composed and written by Augusto Cardinali. The same song was sung by Dario and Grecia in the St.Lucia festival 2005. They placed first and also were the overall winners. They are now invited to represent Malta in an international festival.
Dario is studying the piano and is in Grade 6 at the moment. Apart from singing and playing the piano, Dario has taken part in numerous musicals, few of them are, "Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat", "The Wizard of Oz", "Circle of life", "Sound

Vittorio had the opportunity of participating in two big festivals, “The Gozo Music Festival” which took place in March 2003. He was the only Maltese guest and sang with Magic Box, Ingrid and Gabri Ponte. While the second opportunity was “The Sole Festival” to take place in Dwejra Bay in August 2003. He was amongst a number of local talented singers as well as a number of international guests: Linda lee Hopkins, Colletti and the Gospel Girls, Maya (Holy Ghost), Marvin Prezioso and Dani Deejay. He was awarded the Promising singer of the Year by the Dynamic Promotions.

He has released a CD album which holds 15 songs, 3 of which are original composed specially for him. “Kif Inbdilt”, “Show Me the Way” and “Fid-Djarju tad-Destin”. The others are all cover versions in English and Italian. He participated in various musicals, such as “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Beatle Mania”, “Some Enchanted Evening”, “Music of the Night”, “Sound of Music”, “Fever” the Madonna story, and recently “Cats” and “Phantom of the Opera” .

He also participated in a number of original Maltese Song Festivals: in winter 2004 he came first from the public votes in the “Super One Festival” organized by the “FIDOF” with the song 'Iz-Zoghzija' written by Vittorio Gauci and composed by Elton Zarb. He also participated in another Song Festival “Fl-Ghaqda Il-Melodija” in 2001 where he and the female singer Justine achieved the first place and the best interpretation of the song 'Fid-Djarju tad-Destin' written by Deo Grech and composed by Andrew Zahra. He also was a Guest of the Ministry of Tourism of Tunisia during the Carnival Festivities 2003 on the Island of Djerba, Tunisia. In the Festival “Ghanja tal-Poplu” organised by the YTC in 2004, he interpreted the song “U jghaddi Iz-Zmien” written by Ray Mahoney and composed by Josette Sciberras. In Summer 2005 Lara managed to win a competition held on tv. It was all televoting. She managed to win, even though there were singers like Julie and Ludwig, Aldo Busuttil and Glen. So the televoting can work in any way and maybe we are going to be surprised of who is going to make it to the final! WHo knows maybe someone who is 'not favourite' to win manage to beat 'the favourite'.. We'll wait and see..

I would suggest that from Friday till Saturday 9pm there will not be any critiscm towards the singers who are participating. Because I guess the singers are quite tensed now and its useless that one critise them few hours before the festival. So in that way they don't have comments which can worry them or make them confused. What do you think?
We only support the singers. what do you think? do you agree with me? We boost up their esteem now :)

She has appeared as a guest singer in various local shows and activities, also representing Malta and won first Placing in 'Bimbo Star festival', Gaeta Italy (April 1996).

Sang to the Maltese emigrants in Canada (July 1996) and invited to Canada again the following year (June 1997). She has represented malta in 'Concorso Canoro' festival and won 2nd placing in Rosolini, Sicily (February 2000), 2nd Placing in Super 1 Festival (January 2004) and was awarded the 'FIDOF award' for best newcomer'. She has represented Malta in 'Universe Talent' zlintalent festival Prague (November 2004) and currently working on new projects to represent Malta in the 'Golden Magnolia' festival Louisiana (2005).
In 1998 she was awarded 'Best television / radio children's presenter

Persnally I think Lara and AnnMarie to the finals. Though Lara sounds like a child Brooke Borg has a more powerful voice then she and AnnMArie's diction is horrible!!!!! But those are the best It Just comes NAtural follows!!!

Better Opportunity 2 was top thjose songs that didnt make the top 16, the songs from no17 to no50, the quality would have been much higher!!!

Opportunity 2 in my opinion was a nice show but all in all it was disastrous, it failed. Next year adiopt the same process but to choose to wildcards from the ones that made it with the top 50 or 36 and chosse 4 songs from there who is good still makes it to MSF !!!!!

All established siongers made it. Last year we had Louisanne Tate, Aldo, Manuel,Justine, Rachel&Neville(in the trio), Glen, Christian, J Anvil, and Pamela !!!! All new in MSF they had quality songs and they were all new!!!!! The good ones make it!!!

This year again there are new talents like even though the njumber of songs is 16 not 22 like lastyear: Annabelle Debono, Kevin Borg, Morena(with Paul), Cliff Zammit and Eleonor Spiteri (in Trilogy) and Claudia Faniello !! SO new talents do make it!!!

ifem lara's song was good and the duo song was good their voices weren't. Dario and annmarie were the ones that also deserved to be there. Infact my top 4 for tonight were:
1.Lara
2.Annemarie
3.Dario
4. Josef&Amanda

personally i would have loved to see either dario or annemarie intead of the duo as at least they aren't completly new the the maltese music scene.

Remember guys everyone there is in maltasong this year was/is on tv one day these two weren't so that's a bit difficult as a completly new starngers. But their song did pass as from the first hearing u simply love it, but hearing it 2,3,4,5 etc u start disliking it as u relaise what is is really made of though they were 4th best on the night!
